Knife Scales

All M3 Mokume, Damascus and Pattern Metals are now available as "Matched Sets" in "Face", "Side" and "Burl"(Swirly) grain patterns. These magnificent knife scales are available in stock sizes from 1-1/4” x 4” x 1/16 up to 1-1/2” x 6” x 3/8” (larger sizes by request) and three grain patterns; Face Grain, Side Grain and Burl. They are perfect for knife handles, gun grips, musical instrument inlays, pool cue inlays and many other creative applications. M3 can be cut by a CO2 Laser making inlays, custom branding and lettering both practical and affordable.

“Matching” allows a level of consistency to large editions produced with M3. All M3 patterns are random, but the various grain patterns will all share similarities even over a large number of parts. These scales are diamond sliced from precision sized M3 blocks to precise specifications allowing the faces of each scale to match as closely as possible. Only the best matches make it through our strict quality assurance inspections.

This video will give you an idea of what a finished "Bookmatched Set" should look like. M3 acheives a "Deep Mirror" finish with nothing more than a good "P" grade sandpaper and our 2 part Premium Metal Polish (PMP) in 10 easy steps. Sand 150, 180, 220, 320, 400, 600, 800, clean with 0000 Steel Wool and then polish with PMP part A and B. You know you have the best possible finish when you can't see any surface scratches with a 10x loop.

Mokume Gane
Mokume-Gane (pronounced Moe-koo-may Gah-nay) and literarily translates as “wood grained metal” originated in Japan in the 17th century as a mixed metal laminate with distinctive layered wood grain type patterns. This fascinating material was originally used to create spectacular decorations for Samurai Swords. "M3 Mokume Gane" is a modern interpretation of this ancient Japanese metal art. Today's engineers and scientists use these "Mokume" patterns and M3 technology to create the new "super composites" that are being used to build the future.

While the M3 proprietary process utilizes some very sophisticated equipment and scientific processes, the M3 Mokume wood grain patterns can only be produced by hand. Each blank is an individual work of art created by a master technician. The blanks are made to size in order to insure that the wood grain pattern is always in proportion and the “sweet spot” is just below the surface revealed by turning, carving or milling.

Lava
New for 2012, M3 Lava is produced with real volcanic material from ancient dormant volcanoes found in the Southwest, USA. The volcanic ash is found in a variety of natural colors allowing for dramatic color contrast with other materials especially metal. Once reconstructed by the M3 process, the new molecular structure of the Lava is extremely strong, heat resistant and exhibits a beautiful, durable natural surface. The material is slightly hygroscopic, allowing it to absorb sweat during use and feels really comfortable in your hand.

As with all M3 composite materials, M3 Lava is unbelievably easy to turn, cut, shape and polish with standard wood working tools. Once sanded and finished, M3 Lava is very strong and holds a magnificent mat or deep mirror finish. Engineered to be dense and stable with a high strength-to-weight ratio, M3 Lava will hold the finest of detail. Colors and patterns run completely through the material and the finished product is beautiful, lightweight, very strong, comfortable to wear and to touch and will last for many generations.

In nature, when molten lava pushes through metal deposits found in the earth’s deepest layers, a rare lava and metal Mokume (wood grain) is created. The engineers at M3 have recreated this very rare material by combining M3 Lava with a variety of metals using the M3 process to produce astounding wood grain effects throughout this spectacular material.
